In the 1930’s the Thorpe Park Estate in Surrey was demolished and became a gravel pit for the next 40 years or so. Come the 1970’s a Thorpe Park water based theme park was built in the partially flooded gravel pit, opening in 1979. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s the theme park prospered as a place of major thrill rides. The 2000’s saw it focus on the thrill-seeking teenage audience. Thorpe Park Resort is split into themed areas, including an American 1950’s fishing village, a Canadian Rockies area, a Caribbean Jungle area and a lost city attraction.
